                           FINDING GOD

"The search for finding God is like riding around on an OX hunting for the OX."     ------Buddhist Proverb

We look far and wide for the answers to life's big questions when they may be much closer to us than we realize. How can we open our eyes to the ox we're riding on? Can we really be corrupted by hearing something we disagree with? We often act as if this were the case. We choose friends who tend to agree with us, we join organizations that believe what we believe. We live in places where everyone looks and acts pretty much like us, or we think they do. How fragile must our beliefs be if we resist even listening to opposing ideas? How weak would we have to be to fear being susceptible to every idea that enters our minds? "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it".

It is not the facts, which guide the conduct of a person, but their opinions about facts, which may be entirely wrong. We can only make them right by discussion. If facts were all it took to get people to agree, newspaper editorial pages would disappear. One person argues a position eloquently, based on a set of facts. The next day, someone else argues a different position, equally eloquently, based on the same set of facts.

We look at facts from our own perspective, using them to bolster what we already believe. If we talk with those who disagree, often what we explore is not facts but perspectives. This can be a good thing, because we can't change facts, but we can change our perspective.

So what does God look like? Is He black or white, yellow, brown or red? Is He short or tall, heavy or thin? Is He a man or a woman? GENESIS 1:26, "Then God said, "Let us make Humankind in our image, according to our likeness." I know this let us is a bit confusing and is another,"OPRAH show"(Smile) , but let us not forget this, (Father - Son & Holy Spirit), three in one, even though He had not sent His Son down here yet.

When I was a young boy, my grandparent's friends would observe me for a while and then they would say,"You're the spittin image of your grandmother." They did not mean I looked exactly like my grandmother,(maybe some), I was a boy. They meant I talked and walked and generally conducted myself like her in some things. How did I become my grandmother's image? By living in the same house with her, close enough to observe her everyday and say to myself, "I want to be just like her when I grew up and do things her way."

My grandmother was a God fearing woman who loved the Lord, do anything she could do to help anyone if she could, deliver babies even me. People who often say that she never met a stranger, and today many say the same about me. She use to tell me," successful is  one who digs a well and allows others to draw hope from it." At the time as a kid I had no idea what she meant, but if you got to look over my website you will see the wells that she meant that I could not see as a child.

To be in the image of God means that we are created to live in such close relationship with the Lord that we can daily hear and observe how God speaks and acts. We can begin to speak to others and treat others in the same way that the Lord does. And someday people will say of you,"You're the spittin image of your Father in Heaven". Man or Woman, Boy or Girl.
